How it got started

Co-founders Alex Alben and Patrick Ip met at UCLA Law School, where they co-published a paper on AI and its implications for American Law and co-founded the AI Forum, a 501c3, founded to promote thoughtful discussion of legal and societal challenges by inviting experts in law and technology to share their insights.

Through those initiatives, Alex and Patrick realized there was a gap in using AI and machine learning to give lawyers, clients, and arbitrators insights into the possible outcomes of their cases.

They started Theo Ai to use predictive analytics to fill this knowledge gap, and to help the legal community make more informed decisions with better data.

Co-founded by seasoned entrepreneurs and legal minds

ALEX ALBEN CO-FOUNDER, CO-CEO

A graduate of Stanford University and Stanford Law School, Alben served as the first general counsel of Starwave Corporation, which produced ESPN.com and a series of leading news and sports websites before being acquired by Disney. At streaming media pioneer RealNetworks, which went public during his seven-year tenure, Alex served in multiple executive capacities, including head of music products and industry relations. In 2015, he was selected as the first Chief Privacy Officer for the State of Washington and served four years in that capacity before returning to private sector work. He teaches Privacy, Cybersecurity and Internet Law at the UCLA School of Law.

Outside of work, Alex is the author of three books. He is an avid hiker, skier and baseball fan.

PATRICK IP CO-FOUNDER, CO-CEO

Patrick Ip is an ex-Googler, 2x CEO/Co-founder and UCLA Law MLS. He’s been featured on Forbes 30 Under 30, and twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Prior, Patrick was the Co-founder and CEO of Catalog, which raised $3.1M to help brands use software to seamlessly design and order visual content. In 2011, Patrick founded Kip Solutions, a social media technology company, which was acquired in 2013 by Post+Beam.

Outside of work, Patrick is an amateur triathlete and is known for brewing exotic coffees.
